CEN Breakthrough Video Series
Day #6
Emotional Neglect: What Most Therapists Don't Know and How to Find One Who Does
If this video brought a sense of relief, you're not alone.

Many people who grew up with Childhood Emotional Neglect have tried therapy...

sometimes for years...

and still felt like something important was being missed.

Today's video explains why that happens.
Why CEN Is So Often Overlooked in Therapy
Most therapists understand the general idea of emotional neglect.

They know it means growing up without enough emotional attention.

But what's often missing is a deeper understanding of:
  • What it actually feels like to grow up this way
  • How it shapes your relationship with your emotions
  • How it affects your sense of self in adulthood
  • And what healing truly requires
Without that depth, therapy can feel frustrating or incomplete...

even when the therapist is caring and well-intentioned.

That doesn't mean therapy can't help.

It means CEN requires specific knowledge and skills.
What Someone With CEN Needs From a Therapist
As I described in the video, people who grew up with emotional neglect need a therapist who can do things their parents couldn't.

You need someone who can:
  • Sit with you when you're having a feeling and help you stay with it.
  • Validate your emotions and teach you how to validate your own.
  • Help you recognize when you're having a feeling and name what it is.
  • Focus on emotions, not just thoughts.
  • Reflect back who you are on a deeper level, including patterns like self-neglect, over-empathy, or emotional avoidance.
  • Understand the five stages of healing Childhood Emotional Neglect and guide you through them.
These are not standard therapy skills.

They are specialized.

And they matter.
Why This Makes Such a Difference
When a therapist truly understands Childhood Emotional Neglect, something changes.

You feel:
  • Seen on an emotional level.
  • Understood without having to explain yourself.
  • Less confused about why certain struggles keep repeating.
  • More supported as you learn emotion skills you were never taught
That experience alone can be deeply healing.

For the past ten years, I've been training therapists all over the world to recognize and treat Childhood Emotional Neglect.

On my website, I keep a free list of over 800 therapists worldwide who are familiar with CEN.

Many of them have:
  • Read both of my books.
  • Completed formal training with me.
  • Experience working specifically with CEN clients.
  • Options for online or Zoom therapy.
